Santiago García-Castañón, professor of Spanish in WCU’s Department of World Languages and award-winning poet, recently returned from Puerto Rico, where he was invited to read his works at the 10th International Poetry Festival that took place March 10-17.
Christina L. Reitz, WCU associate professor of music, presented her paper “The Venetian Vistas of Franz Liszt's Années de pèlerinage” at the national conference of the Nineteenth Century Studies Association.
A short story authored by Ron Rash, WCU’s Parris Distinguished Professor of Appalachian Cultural Studies, has been chosen to appear in “The Best American Short Stories 2018,” which will be released by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in October.
On Feb. 5-8, Santiago García-Castañón, professor of Spanish in WCU’s Department of World Languages, attended the V International Conference on History and Literature in Havana, Cuba, where he presented the paper “Los sonetos preliminares de ‘Espejo de paciencia’: análisis métrico y estilístico” (“The Preliminary Sonnets of ‘Espejo de paciencia’: Metric and Stylistic Analysis.”)
Mark A. Kossick, professor of nursing and graduate anesthesia simulation coordinator at WCU’s Biltmore Park instructional site, was the featured speaker at an international conference held in Las Vegas on Jan. 22.
Milton Laufer, director of WCU’s School of Music, and his wife, coloratura soprano Marina De Ratmiroff, will be participating in a short residency and presenting a concert at the inaugural Alberta Chamberfest music festival being held Friday, Feb. 23, through Sunday, Feb. 25, in Edmonton, Alberta, in Canada.
An abstract developed by three members of WCU’s faculty and staff has been accepted for a panel presentation at the Conference on Applied Learning in Higher Education, which will be hosted March 8-10 by the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
An article by Santiago García-Castañón, WCU professor of Spanish, titled “El español en la enseñanza universitaria de los Estados Unidos: retos y oportunidades (Spanish in the Higher Education Setting in the United States: Challenges and Opportunities)” was published in the Actas del II Encuentro de Profesores de Español en Bulgaria (Proceedings of the II Conference of Spanish Professors in Bulgaria).
