Susan Gardner Mayhorn ’93, one of Western Carolina’s most decorated track and field student-athletes of all time, was inducted into the Southern Conference Hall of Fame class of 2018 in March, becoming WCU’s first-ever inductee.

ACADEMIC HOMERUN

Western Carolina softball player Kassandra Flores ’18 was named the 2018 recipient of the Sports Medicine Institute Scholarship by Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System in April.

Western Carolina swept the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Catamount Athletic Complex in May, with the Catamount men wrapping up their third straight title and the women winning their third in four years.

IN MEMORIAM

Jeremiah “Jerry” Wolfe, an elder of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians who received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Western Carolina University during its May 2017 commencement ceremonies, died March 12 at the age of 93.

CLASS NOTES

Axiom Press has published “She Shall Be Called Woman: Unnamed Women of the Bible,” a book by Marie Brooks Holt ’62. An educator who has worked with students from kindergarten through the university level, Holt is a Stephen minister with caregiving responsibilities at St. Mark Presbyterian Church of Ballwin, Missouri, where she also serves as a deacon and elder.
