Nominations sought for WCU’s Mountain Heritage Awards

Western Carolina University is accepting nominations for the Mountain Heritage Award, an honor bestowed annually on one individual and one organization playing a prominent role in researching, preserving and/or interpreting Southern Appalachian history, culture and issues.

‘Watershed Moments’ project gets underway for Cullowhee Valley School

Every Thursday this month, weather permitting, 22 students from Cullowhee Valley School will wade into the water, take samples of aquatic life, and record observations and data while conducting research as part of an afterschool activity led by the Western Carolina University biology department and the Highlands Biological Station.

Deadline nears for Mountain Heritage Day vendor applications

The deadline for vendor applications for Mountain Heritage Day, Western Carolina University’s annual fall festival of traditional Appalachian culture, is rapidly approaching. Organizers said the close of business Friday, April 22, will be the final consideration for arts, crafts and food vendors to submit applications to participate in the family-oriented daylong celebration.

WCU Global Spotlight Series looks at Africa’s role in world affairs

Western Carolina University will host a Global Spotlight Series event on “Africa in World Affairs” on campus Wednesday, April 13. Africa is the focus of a two-year interdisciplinary learning theme ongoing at WCU. The theme allows faculty, students and staff, as well as campus offices and organizations, to explore and connect with Africa in a broader context of politics and policy, as well as history, culture, arts and heritage.
