Freebird McKinney, the state’s 2018 teacher of the year, and Julie Pittman, teacher of the year for Western North Carolina, will be visiting Western Carolina University on Thursday, Feb. 28, to give presentations for WCU teacher education students.
The presentations, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Grandroom of A.K. Hinds University Center, also are open to the campus community and general public.
McKinney, a social studies teacher at Walter M. Williams High School in Burlington, was announced as the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Teacher of the Year for North Carolina last spring. Pittman, an English language arts teacher at R-S Central High School in Rutherfordton, was one of nine finalists for the statewide honor as teacher of the year representing the western region.
The Burroughs Wellcome Fund partners with the N.C. Department of Public Instruction as a major sponsor of the North Carolina Teacher of the Year Program.
The event is sponsored by WCU’s College of Education and Allied Professions. For more information, call the college at 828-227-7311.
