Students and faculty from Western Carolina University’s School of Stage and Screen will present the musical “Spring Awakening” beginning Thursday, April 12, and continuing through Sunday, April 15, at WCU’s John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center.
The Tony Award-winning rock musical, with music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater, is based on an 1891 German play of the same name, which was written by Frank Wedekind. It is the story of late 19th-century German teenagers discovering the tumult of sexuality in a heavily repressed society.
Terrence Mann, WCU’s Phillips Distinguished Professor in Musical Theatre, will direct the production. Bryan McAdams, visiting assistant professor of musical theatre, will serve as musical director, and Ashlee Wasmund, assistant professor of dance, will direct the choreography.
Performances at WCU are set for 7:30 p.m. April 12-14 and at 3 p.m. April 15. The play is intended for mature audiences.
Tickets are $10 for students, $15 for seniors and WCU faculty and staff, and $20 for all others. For tickets or more information, call the Bardo Arts Center box office at 828-227-2479 or visit bardoartscenter.wcu.edu.
