Runners compete in Valley of the Lilies Half Marathon and 5K

Runners take off at the start of the 2018 Valley of the Lilies Half Marathon.

A total of 264 runners and walkers crossed the finish line Saturday, April 7, as the eighth annual Valley of the Lilies Half Marathon and 5K was held on campus.

The half marathon began at 8 a.m. and took runners on a scenic 13.1-mile journey through the WCU campus and along the Tuckaseigee River. The 5K (3.1-mile) run/walk began at 8:15 a.m. Title sponsor for this year’s races was the engineering firm Civil Design Concepts based in Asheville.

Registration for the half marathon totaled 140 participants, and 129 runners finished the course. The overall winner of that race was Andrew Thrasher, 31, of Lake Junaluska, who recorded a time of 1:27:34. The top female finisher in the half marathon was Jennifer Black, 26, of Asheville, who posted a time of 1:36:59.

A total of 183 runners and walkers registered for the 5K, and 135 participants finished the race. The top 5K time was posted by Tyler Watterson, 16, of Sylva, with a time of 18:40. The top female finisher in the 5K was April Barker, 37, of Hazelwood, who came in at 24:12.

Race officials reported that rainy conditions ended right at race time and the weather turned out to be ideal for the event.
