The Western Carolina University Jazz Ensemble will present its annual fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, on campus in the recital hall of the Coulter Building. The performance is free and open to the public.
Joining the student ensemble will be Karel Ruzicka Jr., a Brooklyn-based saxophonist, music educator and composer. A guest artist with Jazz at Lincoln Center, Ruzicka tours with vocalist Michael Franks and has performed with George Benson, Jeff “Tain” Watts and Ravi Coltrane.
Song selections for the performance include jazz classics by Dizzy Gillespie, Chuck Mangione, Herbie Hancock and Billy Strayhorn, as well as jazz adaptations of hits by the British rock group Radiohead.
Members of the ensemble are Chris Leeper, Liam Schaefer, Chris Stallings and Logan Strahley on trumpet; Justin Motley, Tim Justiss, Gregory Regling and Brett Farris on trombone; Christopher Shaw, Jordan Smith, Raymond Frankle, Tyler Towson and Baylee McSwain on saxophone; Blake Jones on guitar; David Kellogg on piano; Matt Brooks on bass guitar; and Logan Jayne and Aaron Brown on drums and percussion. The ensemble is under the direction of Pavel Wlosok, WCU professor of music.
