New traffic signals ready for start of fall semester

The installation of traffic signals has been completed at the corner of Centennial Drive and University Way on the Western Carolina University campus – just in time for the start of fall semester.

The N.C. Department of Transportation project was finished Tuesday, Aug. 15.

“In addition to the traffic signals, the installation of pedestrian crossing lights is a great improvement because of the large number of people crossing Centennial Drive to get to the new freshman parking lot on the west side of N.C. Highway 107,” said Fred Bauknecht, WCU’s director of parking and transportation.

During the heavy traffic of freshman move-in on Friday, Aug. 18, the lights will be flashing and WCU police will be on hand to regulate the traffic flow, he said.
