The second season finale of “David Holt’s State of Music” series featuring bluegrass, traditional gospel and old-time music is set for broadcast Thursday, July 27, at 10 p.m. on UNC-TV and features performances recorded at Western Carolina University.
The traditional music series is produced by WCU alumnus Will McIntyre and directed by his wife, Deni, and hosted by Grammy winner Holt. A third season is currently under production.
The WCU performance took place Nov. 22, 2015, on the stage of John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center to a packed house. Acts joining Holt that day were Rhiannon Giddens, Balsam Range, Josh Goforth and The Branchettes.
“WCU is proud to have partnered with Will and Deni McIntyre to host ‘David Holt’s State of Music on Stage’ at the Bardo Arts Center,” said George Brown, dean of the WCU College of Fine and Performing Arts. “This performance by world-class artists, vividly captured by Will, Deni and their production team, stands as a dynamic example of how Western Carolina University in partnership with our regional community helps to advance the arts across our region.”
The PBS series sprang from an hour-long UNC-TV special in January 2015 on the music of Southern Appalachia and later expanded for a nationwide audience. It has since received critical acclaim and an Emmy nomination.
