Runners of all ages gathered at Western Carolina University on Saturday, April 1, to participate in the seventh annual Valley of the Lilies Half Marathon and 5K.
A total of 278 athletes completed the half marathon (13.1 mile) or 5K (3.1 mile) courses.
The overall winner and top male in the half marathon was Paul Anderson, 27, of Hayesville, with a time of 1:32. The second-place half marathon finisher was Matthew Impagliatelli, 24, of Franklin, at 1:33.
Jennifer Black, 25, of Cullowhee, was the top female half marathon finisher at 1:34, followed by second-place female Kelly Whitlock, 40, of Waynesville, at 1:39.
In the 5K, Jarred Lehr, 26, of Hendersonville, was the overall winner and top male with a time of 18:18. Jacob Deal, 30, an Asheville resident and sergeant in the WCU Police Department, was second overall at 19:18.
The top female in the 5K was Sarah Britton, 27, a Sylva resident and a graduate assistant in WCU’s Department of Biology, at 22:10. Second-place female in the 5K was Tammy Kim, 22, of Sylva, with a time of 23:06.
Race hosts are WCU’s School of Health Sciences and Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness. Proceeds are used to assist WCU students with professional development, presentations and travel to conferences.
