‘I Love WCU’ campaign gets big response from university community

Western Carolina University’s inaugural “I Love WCU” campaign, held throughout the month of February, received a highly positive response from students, alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends of the university, said Claire Burns, WCU’s director of annual giving.

Campaign events were held for students, faculty and staff, with more than 1,100 T-shirts given away and about 870 paper hearts filled out by members of the university community who expressed in their own words why they love WCU.

“While the original goal of the campaign was to secure 500 donors, we greatly surpassed our goal, with 593 people donating $175,421 to WCU in the month of February – a 25 percent increase in donors over February 2016,” Burns said. “The university also felt the love on social media, with many people sharing why they love WCU with #ilovewcu.”

“While gifts were received from many alumni and friends, we are most proud of the support received from WCU’s faculty and staff members during the month of February,” she said. “It is extremely inspiring to see how much our internal stakeholders love this university.”

In 2015-16, 19 percent of WCU employees participated in annual giving efforts by donating more than $199,000 to help support the university’s students and programs. As of March 10, only 87 more faculty and staff donors were needed to reach the goal of 25 percent participation in 2016-17, Burns said.

A new scholarship initiative, the “I Love WCU” scholarship, was established during the February campaign to support a mix of merit- and need-based students. “We are excited to be able to award 10 ‘I Love WCU’ scholarships this fall,” Burns said.
