The Department of Modern Foreign Languages at Western Carolina University will present a Romantic languages poetry reading at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, in Illusions on the second floor of A.K. Hinds University Center.
WCU students, faculty and staff and local residents are invited to attend to share a poem in a Romantic language or listen to others read poems. The five most widely spoken Romantic languages are often considered to be Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and Romanian.
Garrett Fisher, Spanish instructor in the modern foreign languages department and organizer of the event, said the poems recited do not necessarily have to deal with the topic of love, even though Valentine’s Day will be just three days later. The poems also do not have to be the original creations of the readers, but can be compositions written by someone else that have inspired them. “Everyone will be demonstrating their love for another language by simply sharing a poem,” he said.
Admission is free. Attendees are encouraged to wear red, white or black attire.
