Wlosok releases CD of jazz originals

Pavel Wlosok, center, has released ‘Jubilee Suite,’ recorded live in Asheville with musicians Mike McGuirk, left, and John Riley.

Pavel Wlosok, associate professor of jazz studies in the Western Carolina University School of Music, is releasing a jazz CD of original compositions recorded live at a club in Asheville.

“Jubilee Suite” is scheduled for release Friday, Dec. 14, at the Czech Center in New York. Wlosok recorded the CD’s eight tracks at the Grey Eagle, a listening room in Asheville’s River District, with well-respected, longtime jazz musicians John Riley on drums and Mike McGuirk on acoustic bass.

“My sidemen are two of the finest musicians I’ve had the pleasure of working with over my 20-plus years of performing jazz both in the Americas and Europe,” Wlosok said. McGuirk, Riley and Wlosok all are alumni of the University of North Texas, renowned for its jazz program.

The CD was released in July in Wlosok’s native Czech Republic. Wlosok posted a successful appeal for crowd funding for the project at kickstarter.com to offset some of the production costs.

Wlosok has been at WCU since 2002 and is the founder and organizer of the university’s annual Jazz Fest.
