Danny Williamson, track and field coach at WCU, was named women’s coach of the year and men’s co-coach of the year at the 2010 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, held Feb. 25 and 26 at Clemson University.
The Catamount women finished first at the meet, claiming their second title in three years and sixth team title overall. The men placed second, just two points out of first. Williamson’s teams have won a combined 18 championships in his 25 years. He has won indoor coach of the year honors nine times on the women’s side and eight times on the men’s.
He shared the 2010 men’s honor with Samford University’s Rod Tiffin.
Williamson’s father, Roy Williamson, died of bone cancer Feb. 24, a day before the meet began, and was buried the day after it ended. Roy Williamson lobbied his son to attend the meet, and the younger Williamson said he was inspired to do so by Canadian figure skater Joannie Rochette, the bronze medal winner who performed at the Vancouver Olympic Games just days after her mother’s death.
