Western Carolina University’s Symphony Band, directed by Philip Morgan, and Wind Ensemble, directed by John T. West, will present a joint concert featuring student conductors and soloists at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 26, in the recital hall of WCU’s Coulter Building.
Open free to the public, it is the WCU music department’s final concert of the academic year.
The featured students were selected through an audition process. The four student conductors are Jennifer Cloughly, Rebecca Hill, Brandon Meeks and Ron Ryles. They will conduct the Symphony Band in a program of standard band songs, including “Sea Songs” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, “Toccata for Band” by Frank Erickson, “Simple Gifts” by Frank Ticheli and “Fall River Overture” by Robert Sheldon.
Student soloists are Emily Ours and Michael Dobbs, flute; Caitlen Fennell, horn; Billy Dellinger, trumpet; and Sacha Witt, bass trombone. Pieces to be performed are “Andante and Rondo” by Franz Doppler (for two flutes); “Morceau de Concert” by Camille Saint-Saens (for horn solo); “Concerto in Eb” by J.B.G. Neruda (for trumpet); and “Rhapsody for Bass Trombone” by Frigyes Hidas.
