Chancellor to chair national committee on economic development

CULLOWHEE – The American Association of State Colleges and Universities has appointed Western Carolina University Chancellor John W. Bardo to serve as chairman of the organization’s committee on economic and work force development.

Bardo will serve a one-year term as chairman of the committee, composed of presidents and chancellors of other AASCU member institutions.

AASCU is a national organization representing more than 430 public universities, colleges and systems of higher education across the United States and its territories. The association works to promote appreciation and support for public higher education and the contributions of public colleges and universities; analyze public policy and advocate for member institutions and the students they serve; provide policy leadership and program support to strengthen academic quality, promote access and inclusion, and facilitate educational innovation; and create professional development opportunities for institutional leaders.

The committee on economic and work force development is charged with assisting AASCU institutions in enhancing the scope and visibility of economic and workforce development efforts in partnership with their communities and their regions. It is among six standing committees established by AASCU’s board of directors to advance the association’s work in the arena of public higher education.
