Western Carolina names director for athletics development

CULLOWHEE – William A. Richter, director of athletic marketing and promotions at the University of Pennsylvania, has been named director of athletic development at Western Carolina University.

Richter, who has 18 years of administrative experience in athletics programs at five NCAA Division I institutions, joins Western’s Office of University Development effective June 1. He will serve as executive director of the Catamount Club, the university’s athletics fund-raising organization.

Richter succeeds Marty Ramsey, who has been named director of alumni affairs. Ramsey will continue to work in conjunction with the Catamount Club on special projects, including the annual Catamount Club Auction.

During his five years at Penn, Richter created and oversaw implementation of individually tailored marketing and community relations programs for each of the university’s 33 intercollegiate teams and the world-renowned Penn Relays Carnival. The initiatives shattered existing revenue and attendance records and were recognized by a nomination for the institution’s prestigious “President’s Model of Excellence Award.”

He served previously as associate athletics director for development and marketing at Drexel University, director of trademark licensing at the University of Pittsburgh, athletics marketing and events coordinator at Idaho State University, and assistant director of athletics marketing and promotion at the University of Hawaii. He also was director of collegiate marketing for Affinity Marketing Inc. and university relations representative with the Collegiate Licensing Co.

Richter holds a bachelor’s degree in sports management and marketing from the State University of New York at Brockport and a master’s degree in athletics administration from Idaho State University. He also graduated from the business management certificate program of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania .
