CULLOWHEE – Eight Western Carolina University students recently received William Dameron Memorial Occupational Safety Scholarships funded by the North Carolina State Safety Conference Inc.
To be eligible for the $500 awards, students must complete five specialized courses in health, first aid, safety standards, environmental instrumentation and safety management. The occupational safety sequence is designed to prepare professionals to meet safety standards in business, education and industry, and to minimize loses from accidents, health claims, legal action and property damage.
Students who complete the program are awarded the N.C. Industrial Commission/Western Carolina University Occupational Safety Certification, which qualifies them for professional safety employment. The recipients, listed by county:
Burke – Jonathan Pitts of Morganton, graduate student, 1986 graduate of Freedom High School.
Cabarrus – Edward Vick of Concord, senior engineering technology major, 2000 graduate of Concord High School.
Haywood – Adam Bridges of Canton, senior industrial distribution major, 2000 graduate of Pisgah High School; Marcos Angel Gutierrez of Hazelwood, senior construction management major.
Henderson – William Extine of Arden, senior manufacturing engineering technology major, 1999 graduate of West Henderson High School.
Jackson – Charles Reagan of Whittier, senior environmental health major, 1996 graduate of Smoky Mountain High School; Jason Sisk of Cullowhee, graduate student, 1998 graduate of East Rutherford High School.
Madison – Kerry Richard Barrett of Hot Springs, senior environmental health major, 1970 graduate of Colonial High School.
