Western history professor wins Creighton Sossomon Professorship

CULLOWHEE – Gael N. Graham, associate professor of history at Western Carolina University, has been awarded the university’s Creighton Sossomon Professorship in History.

A member of Western’s faculty since 1990, Graham received her bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Santa Cruz and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan.

Graham is the author of numerous research papers and publications, and is currently working on a book-length manuscript titled “Beyond Your Command: American High Schools in the 1960s.”

The professorship, established in honor of the late history professor emeritus D. Creighton Sossomon, is designed to strengthen the faculty in the history department by providing a salary supplement to retain outstanding teachers-scholars in American, English or European history. Appointment to the professorship is for a three-year term.
