Teams probe diverse topics during summer research

The question of whether substance abuse treatment reduces the likelihood of heroin users having repeat contact with the criminal justice system and the development of a special buoy to convert ocean wave energy into electricity are among the topics being investigated during the second year of Western Carolina University’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program.

When Western Carolina University alumnus Chase Weddle began working two years ago with two classmates, Ross Henley and Robert Bianculli, on their Department of Engineering and Technology senior capstone project, a solar power generating facility and hammock “hanging lounge,” he figured it would just be a research project that would eventually be put in a file and maybe used in the future.

WCU’s engineering honor society Tau Beta Psi inducts new members

Tau Beta Psi, the local engineering honor society at Western Carolina University, inducted seven new members in a recent ceremony. Tau Beta Psi admits engineering students who rank in the top eighth of the junior class or top fifth of the senior class and have demonstrated moral character and a commitment to service.
