Campus police officers from four states are expected to take part in a one-day training session titled “Campus Public Safety Response to Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents” to be held at Western Carolina University on Tuesday, Aug. 17.
The N.C. General Assembly has approved partial funding for a collaborative effort by Western Carolina University, the University of North Carolina at Asheville and the Mountain Area Health Education Center to promote wellness and healthy lifestyles among all population groups – especially the growing number of elderly.

Dr. John Bardo, Chancellor of Western Carolina University, has named Fred Cantler Interim Director of Athletics as a national search begins to replace former Catamount Director of Athletics Jeff Compher, who is going to the University of Washington as executive associate director of athletics for the Huskies.
C. Jeffrey Compher, director of athletics at Western Carolina University since March 2000, is leaving the Catamounts to accept a position at the University of Washington where he will be joining long-time mentor Todd Turner, his former boss at Vanderbilt University and at N.C. State University.
A $420,000 award from the U.S. Department of Energy through Oak Ridge National Laboratory will enable Western Carolina University and Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College to work with an Etowah manufacturing company to create a prototype of a new type of dual-serve application, energy-efficient water heater.
