Tennessee’s Dobyns-Bennett is grand champion of WCU’s Tournament of Champions

Twenty-five bands from across the Southeast took part in the 17th annual Tournament of Champions high school marching band competition at WCU on Oct. 21.

Dobyns-Bennett High School marching band of Kingsport, Tennessee, took home the grand champion award at the 17th annual Tournament of Champions high school marching band competition at Western Carolina University on Saturday, Oct. 21.

Dobyns-Bennett received the Chancellor’s Award, a traveling trophy awarded annually to the grand champion. Harrison High School of Kennesaw, Georgia, was the reserve grand champion while Georgia’s Kennesaw Mountain placed third. Receiving the Roll of Honor, an award given to the band from North Carolina with the top score, was Sanderson High School in Raleigh. In all, 25 high schools competed from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee in the event hosted by WCU’s Pride of the Mountains Marching Band at E.J. Whitmire Stadium.

The bands competed in four classes – A, AA, AAA and AAAA. Winners from each class, as well as the next six highest scoring bands, competed in the finals.
