Best of the West Competition Series starts Sept. 13

The inaugural Best of the West Competition Series for Western Carolina University students will kick off with a singer-songwriter contest at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, in the Grandroom of Western Carolina University’s A.K. Hinds University Center.

The event is the first of six competitions that will be held throughout the academic year followed by a series finale. The series is sponsored by Last Minute Productions and the Arts and Cultural Events series.

Each competition will produce two winners – one from a panel of judges consisting of one WCU faculty member, one staff member and a student, and the other coming from audience voting.

The winners from each series will be invited to participate in the series finale on April 18 during Student Appreciation Week.

The other competitions are a variety competition on Oct. 4; a “Rap Battle” on Nov. 1; stand-up comedy on Jan. 31; a dance competition on Feb. 28; and “Battle of the Bands” on March 18. All events will be at 8 p.m. in the University Center’s Grandroom and are free and open to the public.

Those students wishing to participate can register at the guest services desk in the University Center. For more information, contact Brandon Lokey at bklokey@wcu.edu.
