NC House elects WCU trustee to serve on UNC board

The N.C. House of Representatives on Wednesday, April 5, elected Carolyn L. Coward, secretary of the Western Carolina University Board of Trustees, to serve on the University of North Carolina Board of Governors.

Coward, an attorney with the Van Winkle Law Firm of Asheville, will join the UNC board effective July 1. She was appointed by the Board of Governors to the WCU board in 2011 and was reappointed to the position in 2015.

“This is an auspicious recognition for Carolyn,” said WCU Chancellor David O. Belcher. “Truly, our loss is the UNC system’s gain. Carolyn will bring a strong, native Western North Carolinian perspective to the board, and her outstanding record of service to the region will prove a valuable asset to the UNC system.”

Coward will be joined on the UNC board by fellow WCU trustee Thomas H. Fetzer, who was elected to the Board of Governors by the N.C. Senate last week.

Coward and Fetzer will be recognized for their service to the university at the June meeting of the Board of Trustees, which will mark the final WCU board meeting for both.
