Hunter Library announces publication of rare Great Smoky Mountains book

Western Carolina University has published a reissue of “Twenty Years of Hunting and Fishing in the Great Smokies,” a rare regional classic originally published in 1926 and written by Samuel Hunnicutt.

The WCU edition is now for sale by the University of North Carolina Press and through Amazon and contains an introduction by Jim Casada, a noted outdoors writer and Smokies enthusiast. Hunnicutt, a Swain County resident, was known for his wilderness prowess in the mountains prior to the establishment of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Few of his original books, published by S.B. Newman & Company of Knoxville, Tennessee, are known to exist today.

A grant from the Thomas W. Ross Fund to Hunter Library made the project possible. The WCU Office of Creative Services designed the cover, while the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center provided digitization services, with Elizabeth Skene, WCU special and digital collections librarian, leading the project.
