WCU trio makes chemistry fun for Estes Elementary students

Ben Rickert, assistant director of communications for Buncombe County Schools, reported that students at Estes Elementary School in Arden “were raving about how much they learned and all the fun they had” following a visit to the school by two faculty members from Western Carolina University’s Department of Chemistry and Physics, Carmen Huffman and Alesia Jennings, and a WCU senior majoring in chemistry, Ryan Archer.

A Facebook post about the visit related how “the trio taught kids about the states of matter and chemical reactions with plenty of colorful bubbling solutions, clever science jokes and – of course – loud bangs which made the students squeal with delight.”

Huffman is an associate professor of chemistry and Jennings is a lecturer in the department.
