The N.C. Senate has elected Thomas H. Fetzer, a member of the Western Carolina University Board of Trustees since 2015, to serve on the University of North Carolina Board of Governors.
Fetzer, a former three-term mayor of Raleigh, will join the UNC board effective July 1.
“While I am disappointed to lose Tom from the WCU Board of Trustees, I am delighted that this opportunity has come along for him,” said WCU Chancellor David O. Belcher. “It is well deserved. Moreover, I am confident that his experience here with our outstanding board will prove to be a strong foundation for his service to the entire UNC system.”
In addition, current Board of Trustees member Carolyn Coward is among the N.C. House of Representatives nominees for service on the UNC board. A vote on the House’s slate of nominees is expected by next week, said Melissa Canady Wargo, chief of staff.
A past chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, Fetzer is president of Fetzer Strategic Partners, a Raleigh-based firm specializing in government relations, public and media relations, survey research and crisis management. He was elected to his first two-year term as mayor of Raleigh in 1993, becoming the city’s youngest mayor.
Coward, an attorney with the Van Winkle Law Firm of Asheville, is currently serving as secretary of the WCU Board of Trustees.
