Local students raising funds to Bike Across America

Ten local middle school and high school students are preparing to embark on an 800-mile bicycle odyssey across America.

The students – from Cherokee, Swain, Graham, Madison and Buncombe counties – are part of Project Discovery, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and hosted by Western Carolina University. Their trip, Bike Across America, begins Sunday, June 28, in Yorktown, Virginia, and will conclude Sunday, July 19, in St. Louis.

Project Discovery is an Educational Talent Search Program that helps many low-income, first-generation students go to college. During their trip across America, the students will experience being the “Leader of the Day” by developing their own leadership style, practicing conflict resolution skills, being a better communicator and practicing situational leadership theory.

To cover their expenses, each student is responsible for raising $600. So far, nearly $4,000 has been raised. To learn more about their trip, or to make a donation, visit http://www.gofundme.com/studentsBAM.
