Local students win honors at language contest

Some 275 high school students from across Western North Carolina gathered at Western Carolina University’s Ramsey Center on Tuesday, March 12, to test their knowledge of French and Spanish in the university’s 31st annual Foreign Language Contest.

The competition was sponsored by WCU’s Department of Modern Foreign Languages. Individuals and teams competed in the categories of music, skits, quiz bowl, native speaker Spanish quiz bowl, show and tell, poetry recitations, how-to, and extemporaneous speaking.

Students, faculty and staff from the modern foreign languages department, along with volunteers from other departments on campus, served as judges.

Participating high schools included Andrews, Carolina Day, East Henderson, Franklin, Henderson County Early College, North Henderson, Tuscola and West Henderson.

Winning students and schools are

French music: First, Tuscola; second, East Henderson; third, Carolina Day.

Spanish music: First, Franklin; second, North Henderson; third, West Henderson.
