The 2012 edition of Western Carolina University’s Pride of the Mountains Marching Band has been selected as one of 10 to be highlighted at the College Band Directors National Association’s National Convention in March.
A video of the band will be presented Thursday, March 21, at the convention in Greensboro by David Starnes, director of athletic bands, and Matt Henley, assistant director of athletic bands. The convention, which is held every four years, takes place this year at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Bands were selected based on criteria including quality of musical and marching performance, showmanship and audience effectiveness and depiction of effective tradition or innovation.
In 2012, the WCU Pride of the Mountains performed its show “How We Roll” at events including home football games, the Tournament of Champions regional marching band competition and the Band of America Grand National Championships in Indianapolis. The production featured the music of Tchaikovsky, Katy Perry, ke$ha, Adele, V.I.C., Billy Joel, Van Morrison, Chonique Sneed, Brian Setzer and PSY.
Other ensembles to be featured at the upcoming national convention are bands from Georgia State University, West Chester University, Texas State University, Bowling Green State University, University of Texas, Arizona State University, Baylor University, University of Florida and the University of Connecticut.
