Students from Western Carolina University’s School of Teaching and Learning will hold a bake sale from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, to help raise funds for a trip this spring to Finland, where they will study schools that are ranked No. 1 in literacy test scores.

The bake sale, to be held in A.K. Hinds University Center on the WCU campus, is one of several upcoming events in the works to help the students raise funds for the trip abroad.

During the trip, scheduled for April 2-25, the WCU student teachers will attend classes at the University of Oulu and have a two-week internship at Oulu International School, said Roya Scales, a literacy education professor in WCU’s elementary and middle grades education program.

Upcoming fundraising activities include a cultural awareness event from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in the Killian Building and a yard sale from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday, Dec. 8, in the parking lot of Stanberry Insurance in Sylva.
