The Rafe Hollister Band will play a free concert on the University Center lawn Thursday, July 12, at Western Carolina University.

The Rafe Hollister Band from Maggie Valley will bring its “mountain rock” to Western Carolina University with a free concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 12, on the lawn of the A.K. Hinds University Center.

The Rafe Hollister band is Sam Brinkley on lead vocals, drums and harmonica; Jeff Mendenhall on fiddle; Brooks Butler on lead guitar and backing vocals; Mike Filippone on bass and backing vocals; and Mark Moser on mandolin. Traditional bluegrass instruments played with a rock influence create “a fiery brand of roots music,” according to the band’s website. Also according to the site, Rafe Hollister is known for “high-octane live shows” and “has played more hoedowns, bars, festivals, biker rallies, barn burners and house parties than you can shake a stick at.”

Shows in the 2012 Summer Concert Series, presented by Western Carolina University’s Arts and Cultural Events, or ACE, happen at 7 p.m. each Thursday through July on the lawn of the A.K. Hinds University Center. The concerts are free and open to the public, and audience members are invited to bring blankets, chairs and snacks. Rain location is inside the University Center.
