Western Carolina University’s Sarah Nuñez, assistant director of undergraduate admission based at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, leaves Saturday, April 9, for a four-week Rotary Group Study Exchange in Brazil.
Nuñez, who is Colombian-American and developed a Latino Student Resource Guide, will spend four weeks working on university campuses in the Rio Grande do Sul region in Brazil.
In addition, she will represent WCU International Programs and Services on a two-day visit to Universidade Católica de Petrópolis, which is about 50 minutes outside of Rio de Janeiro
“I will be giving a presentation each night to 150 to 300 students, as well as getting a tour of campus and meeting with faculty and staff,” said Nuñez, one of four members of Rotary Club District 7670 participating in the exchange. “I am excited to travel to Brazil and learn about how the university and education systems work. I have wanted to travel there for many years, and I’m honored to do this in collaboration with the Office of Admissions, International Programs and Services at WCU, and the Rotary Club.”
Nuñez has been studying Portuguese for the past three months. She said she is looking forward to practicing the language and learning about Brazilian culture and traditions.
“I hope that WCU will have some Brazilian students come to study, or WCU students go to Brazil in the coming years,” she said.
When she returns from the exchange, she will make several presentations on the WCU campus.
“We’re excited for Sarah and all the knowledge that she will bring back to WCU,” said Phil Cauley, director of enrollment management and transitions.
