Sixteen participants were recognized for their performance in the second annual Citizens Race held Sept. 11 on the Tuckaseigee River in Cullowhee.

“We persevered through the rain,” said Maurice Phipps, event organizer and professor of health, physical education and recreation at Western Carolina University.

In the event, a competition for amateur paddlers, participants paddled canoes or kayaks through 10 slalom gates, which are plastic poles hung over the water about 3 feet apart, on a flat section of the river off Old Cullowhee Road.

A fundraiser for the Cullowhee Revitalization Endeavor, the race was sponsored by WCU’s parks and recreation management program, Parks and Recreation Management Club, Base Camp Cullowhee and the Quality Enhancement Plan administration.
