Mountain Heritage Day to include beard and moustache contest, other fun competitions

Men who are tired of shaving will have a legitimate excuse not to during the month of September. They can just say they are getting ready for the beard and moustache contest at Western Carolina University’s Mountain Heritage Day.

The competition for the hairy-faced will be held at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, on the festival’s Heritage Stage. There is no entrance fee for the contest, and admission and parking is free at WCU’s daylong celebration of traditional mountain culture.

Festival visitors also will have an opportunity to participate in several other competitions, including the festival 5K, which is set for 8 a.m. Sponsored by the Sport Management Association, a student organization on campus, the race will begin in front of McKee Building on Central Drive in Cullowhee.

Registration and check-in will be held from 7 to 7:45 a.m. Entry fees are $15 for runners who register on, or before, Sept. 23; $25 on race day; $10 for students with a valid identification card; and $15 for “phantom runners” who do not wish to run, but want to make a donation to the SMA endowed scholarship fund.

All participants, including phantom runners, will receive a T-shirt, bottled water and fruit at the completion of the race. Runners with the best times will be recognized and will receive an award.

For more information about the 5K, or to obtain a registration form, contact Kadie Otto at (828) 227-3548 or e-mail kotto@wcu.edu. A printable registration form will be posted on the Web at MountainHeritageDay.com.
