Assessing suicide risk is the topic of a daylong professional development workshop to be held Friday, Sept. 10, at Western Carolina University.
“Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk” will include lectures, exercises, journaling and group discussion. Participants also will watch a video and receive a training manual.
The workshop will help participants experience an increased willingness, confidence and clarity in working with individuals at risk for suicide. Participants will gain knowledge in maintaining an effective attitude and approach; collecting accurate assessment information; formulating risk; developing a treatment and services plan; and managing care.
Glen Martin of Counseling and Wellness Services at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will lead the workshop. Martin holds a doctorate in counseling psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University and throughout his 25-year career he has been a therapist, supervisor, researcher and administrator in the university counseling center setting.
Registration for the workshop is required. The workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will include lunch. On-site check-in will begin at 8 a.m. the day of the workshop in Room 143 in the Cordelia Camp Building.
