WCU to host Chinese-English language camp

Western Carolina University’s Division of Educational Outreach will host a Chinese-English language camp for Chinese and American students from Saturday, July 3, through Sunday, Aug. 1.

The East Wind West Wind Summer Camp will give Chinese and American students ages 10 through 14 the opportunity to combine language learning and personal enrichment. Chinese students will learn English and American students will learn Mandarin Chinese taught by teachers from China.

The camp is sponsored by the East Wind West Wind Foundation.

“Our foundation is a non-profit registered in North Carolina,” said Roy Douthitt, the designer of the program and director of QSI International School of Chongqing in China. “Our mission is to improve the teaching of Mandarin in the United States and to help facilitate cross-cultural exchanges between students, teachers, and educational leadership. This is the first of what will be three on-going summer camps – two in the United States and one in Chongqing.”

Classes will be held from 8:30 until 11:50 a.m., Monday through Friday, and afternoons will include a variety of activities ranging from sports to crafts. The camp also will offer local trips on weekends.

Whitewater rafting will be available to the 13- and 14-year-old participants with parental permission and an additional cost of $100.

Mixed housing will allow students to room with a person of a different ethnicity.

The camp cost of $3,396 includes housing, food, tuition, insurance, books and fees for the entire camp session. A non-refundable application fee of $300 is required for all participants, followed by full payment due on Friday, April 16.

“This is the first camp of its kind anywhere,” Douthitt said. “It is not just a summer camp to teach Chinese. It is unique because for the first time a camp is bringing together an equal number of young Chinese and American students to live and study together on an American campus.”
