Mark Nizer's 3D variety act is just one of eight offerings for the 2010-11 Galaxy of Stars series.

Where can you find fiddling siblings, performing cats and a master juggler who incorporates 3-D technology into his act? It’s all on the bill for the 2010-2011 Galaxy of Stars season at Western Carolina University.

This is the sixth season of Galaxy of Stars performances, featuring world-class theater, music and dance staged in WCU’s Fine and Performing Arts Center and presented by the College of Fine and Performing Arts. Many of the performances are suitable for children 5 years of age and older.

Subscription renewal for current season-ticket holders is Saturday, May 1-Monday, May 31. The subscription period for new subscribers is Tuesday, June 1-Friday, Aug. 27. At $130 (and $40 for students and children), subscriptions offer a substantial savings over individual ticket prices and allow patrons to select and keep preferred seats.

Individual tickets for the 2010-2011 series go on sale Tuesday, Aug. 10. Those prices are $25 for adult tickets; $20 for people 60 years and older and WCU faculty and staff; $15 per person for groups of 15 or more; and $5 for students and children.

The series events are as follows:

  • 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 28: Neal E. Boyd, a pop opera tenor and 2008 winner of “America’s Got Talent.”
  • 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24: The Hunt Family, a mother, father and seven children who perform Irish dance and play original, Celtic, bluegrass, inspirational and popular tunes.
  • 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3: The Massenkoff Russian Folk Festival, a high-spirited celebration of Russian heritage including traditional song, dance and music.
  • 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4: Lance Brown’s “Will Rogers Now!,” a portrait of the gentle American hero in words, theater and song.
  • 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10: “Hank and My Honky-Tonk Heroes,” an homage by singer, actor and musician Jason Petty of Hank Williams and other legends of country music.
  • 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28: “Mark Nizer 3D,” a performance that includes comedy, juggling and other tricks incorporating 3-D technology.
  • 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24: Songs and stories from John Davidson, star of music, television, film and stage.
  • 3 p.m. Sunday, May 1: Popovich Comedy Pet Theater, juggling and European-style comedy featuring cats and dogs, all rescued from animal shelters.

The Galaxy of Stars series debuted in 2005 with the opening of the Fine and Performing Arts Center. Since then, FAPAC has marked more than 100,000 visitors and has earned a position as a premier arts and entertainment venue in Western North Carolina.

In celebration of its fifth birthday, FAPAC will host “’S Wonderful” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, a musical revue celebrating the genius of George and Ira Gershwin. Tickets for “’S Wonderful” will be available Tuesday, Aug. 17.
