The Western Carolina University Wind Ensemble will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, in the Fine and Performing Arts Center.

Much of the program for the concert will be the same as what had been scheduled for a concert in February that was canceled due to a snowstorm, said John T. West, conductor of the Wind Ensemble.

“The group was all set to perform as part of the All-District Band weekend when the unexpected storm forced us to cancel just a few hours before the scheduled time,” West said. “All of us were extremely disappointed that we had to cancel, so we decided to perform essentially the same program – with a few additions – for our March concert.”

The program will begin with Aaron Copland’s famous work “Fanfare for the Common Man,” composed in 1942. The piece features 14 brass and percussion players.

The ensemble also will perform jazz-oriented music by composer John Williams from the 2002 movie “Catch Me if You Can.” The piece features saxophone soloist Ian Jeffress, saxophone instructor at WCU. Symphony No. 2 composed in 1972 by John Barnes Chance will follow.

Other works include “Peaches and Cream Fox Trot” by John Philip Sousa, “Hold This Boy and Listen” by Carter Pann and a piece incorporating the style of the Argentinean tango called “Vientos y Tangos” by Michael Gandofi.

The concert will conclude with a piece by Julie Giroux, “Khan,” inspired by the life of Genghis Khan.

There is no admission charge for the concert. For more information about the performance, contact the FAPAC box office at 828-227-2479 or go to the Web site www.wcu.edu/fapac.
