WCU self-help group for people who stutter opens to community
A free self-help group for people who stutter facilitated by Western Carolina University is expanding and inviting members of the community to participate.
The purpose of the group is to provide a setting in which participants freely discuss their communication experiences and receive mutual support as they work toward achieving communication goals and objectives.
Coordinating the group is David A. Shapiro, speech-language pathologist, board-recognized fluency specialist, and the Robert Lee Madison Distinguished Professor with WCU’s Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences and Speech and Hearing Clinic. Discussion topics are chosen by group members.
“Participants freely discuss their unique communication goals and objectives,” said Shapiro. “The social setting provides an informal, friendly and natural context in which each member is comfortable to participate.”
The group currently in operation at WCU is for young adults. Groups for participants of other ages may be considered depending upon expression of interest. For more information, contact Shapiro at 828-227-3291 or shapiro@email.wcu.edu.
