The scholarly research of Western Carolina University’s graduate students will be showcased during the university’s 18th annual Graduate Research Symposium on Thursday, March 11, at A.K. Hinds University Center.

Approximately 80 students will present projects on topics such as “A Room of Their Own?: The Rhetoric of African-American Women,” “Cullowhee: Incorporation versus Annexation,” “Great Laurel Effects on Microhabitat Use and Abundances of Southern Appalachian Salamanders” and “Western Carolina University and the Jackson County Green Energy Park: Creating Ecologically Sustainable Social Entrepreneurship Through the Arts in North Carolina.”

“For many of our graduate students, this will be their first opportunity to share empirical findings and creative works with the academic community,” said Scott Higgins, dean of WCU’s Graduate School and Research, which sponsors the event. “During the symposium, they will take the first step in becoming recognized as scholars in their chosen disciplines. The skills they learn as part of the research process and their ability to convey that research in writing and in person will enable them to establish their authority within their disciplines and to improve the world in which we live.”

Participating students and their faculty sponsors will be honored at a reception beginning at 5 p.m. March 11 in the University Center Grandroom. A  Best Research Presentation Award and eight other awards will be given to student presenters who entered the Graduate Research Competition, which is a complementary activity to the symposium. Also, winners of the Graduate Assistant Teaching Award, Karen Nicholson Thesis Award and North Carolina Research Recognition Award will be announced.
