The spring semester portion of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, part of Western Carolina University’s Lectures, Concerts and Exhibitions Series, will get under way Thursday, Feb. 18, in the theater of the A.K. Hinds University Center with “Trimpin: The Sound of Invention.”

The series also feature the films “God’s Architects” on Thursday, March 25, and “Between Floors” on Thursday, April 15.

“Trimpin: The Sound of Invention” is a documentary about the artist/inventor Gerhard Trimpin and his innovative sound sculptures. Trimpin is most widely known for incorporating musical instruments into his designs. His most recent piece, “Shang High,” was featured at the 2009 Ojai Music Festival in June.

Peter Esmonde, the film’s producer/director, will take part in a discussion as part of the screening of “Trimpin.”

Coming up in March, “God’s Architects” tells the stories of five divinely inspired artist-architects and their mysterious creations. The film, produced and directed by Zack Godshall, details how and why these unknown creators, with neither funding nor blueprints, construct their self-made environments.

Wrapping up the series in April, “Between Floors” examines the human condition by intercutting between five stuck elevators and the people trapped inside them. “Between Floors” won director Jen White the best director award at the 2009 Atlanta Underground Film Festival.

Southern Circuit is the nation’s only regional tour of independent filmmakers, providing communities with an interactive way of experiencing independent film. The goal is to connect audiences with independent filmmakers and encourage them to talk with one another about the films and their meanings. The tour comes to WCU in conjunction with the 2009-10 Lectures, Concerts and Exhibitions Series, which brings a dynamic mix of arts and culture to campus.
