Western Carolina University’s Division of Educational Outreach will offer three dance classes on Thursdays, Feb. 4 through March 18, in Room 134 of the Cordelia Camp Building.

“Beginning Swing Dance/Jitterbug” will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. The class is an introduction to East Coast swing or jitterbug. Participants will learn the basic six-count pattern and begin working on triple-time.

“Ballroom Dance” will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Participants will practice the basics of leading and following in a social ballroom dance situation. Several dance styles, such as waltz, tango, cha-cha, swing and fox trot, will be covered.

“Lindy Hop,” a fast and fun version of swing dancing that is based on an eight-count pattern of footwork, will be offered from 8 until 9 p.m. The class will cover the basics of the dance and related dance styles.

Heidi Turlington, dance instructor, has taught dance to all ages, from preschoolers to adults. Turlington has a bachelor’s degree in dance education from Meredith College and a master’s degree in physical education from WCU. Her dance background covers a variety of styles, from swing and ballroom, to ballet, tap, jazz, modern and African dance.

She is a previous co-captain of the MAD Hoppers, an award-winning swing dance team from Raleigh, and spent three years competing nationally and touring locally with the team. She currently performs with the Swing Asheville Lindy Hoppers and the Tackie Annies, two swing dance groups based in Asheville. She also dances with the Asheville Ballet.

All participants may come with or without a partner and should wear comfortable, soft-bottomed shoes.

The cost is $59 for one class or $49 per class for participants taking two or three classes. Discounts are available for WCU students and employees. For more information on WCU dance classes, visit http://learn.wcu.edu or call 828-227-7397 or 800-928-4968.
