Western Carolina University’s flag football team finished third in the Co-Rec Collegiate Division at the 31st annual American Collegiate Intramural Sports National Flag Football Championship held in New Orleans in December.
The WCU Shockers lost in semifinals to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, which went on to win the tournament. Centario Grier, a WCU senior from Charlotte, was named to the All-American Offensive Team.
The WCU team earned a $500 travel stipend and paid entry to the national tournament by winning their division at the “Battle of the Bluegrass” Regional Flag Football Tournament held at Western Kentucky University in November.
Bradley Blair, assistant director of intramural sports at WCU, said many of the team members became friends and played together through intramural sports on campus. In addition to Grier, members of the WCU team that played at nationals were Marcus Brown, a senior from Cary; Erin Brownback, a senior from Murphy; Jessica Clontz, a senior from Cylde; Cole Drawdy, a freshman from Mooresville; Rachel Drawdy, a junior from Moorseville; Alex Humphries, a senior from Selma; Dillan Ledbetter, a junior from Weaverville; Jessica Martin, a senior from Charlotte; Nikki Tatham, a junior from Asheville; and Abby Walls, a senior from Cherryville.
