Emergency workers extinguish a small fire at Hoey Auditorium

Emergency workers extinguished a small fire at Hoey Auditorium that was reported at 10:38 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16.

The blaze was limited to the stage area of the auditorium, with localized soot and water damage to the stage, curtains and stage lighting. No injuries were reported.

The area was closed to pedestrian traffic as emergency workers cleared smoke from the building and completed their work at the scene. Hoey Auditorium will remain closed until facilities management workers have assessed and cleaned up the damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Responding to the fire, in addition to firefighters from the Cullowhee Fire Department, Sylva Fire Department and Savannah Fire Department, were the Western Carolina University Police Department, Jackson County Emergency Management, Jackson County Fire Marshal and WestCare Emergency Management Service.

The 500-seat Hoey Auditorium serves as the venue for a number of University Theatre plays as well as selected Lectures, Concerts and Exhibitions Series events.
