Western music professor Mario Gaetano wins ASCAP award

CULLOWHEE – Mario Gaetano, professor of music at Western Carolina University, is a recipient of a 2004-05 Standard Award, presented by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

The cash awards from ASCAP are designed to reward and encourage composers who make important contributions, but whose published music generates relatively small royalties.

Gaetano writes music for percussion instruments that is designed to be accessible to student performers and school-level ensembles. He has more than 30 published compositions to his credit that are performed worldwide. His “Scenes from Earth” for percussion ensemble (in four movements) was published this summer by C. Alan Publications. The Ju Ensemble of Taiwan is producing a pedagogical video and CD-ROM containing excerpts from Gaetano’s pieces, scheduled for release this fall.
